The Highgate Floor Sanding Company
Highgate
We refer to that giant among Elizabethan and Stuart brains, (once championed as the author of Shakespeare’s plays) the former Lord Chancellor, Francis Bacon. One winter morning in 1626, he was out with friends on Highgate Hill when he decided to demonstrate his theory of preserving meat by freezing.
He bought a chicken from a poor woman and stuffed it with snow. Alas, it wasn’t only the bird that got chilled…
Bacon was forced to go to the Earl of Arundel’s house. Another bad move: the newly-warmed bed he was placed in was still damp. Bacon contracted pneumonia and died the next month in the arms of – this isn’t made up – his relative, Sir Julius Caesar.
The house and bed are long gone – but Bacon Lane marks the spot today!
